The Algarve!

The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, incorporating 16 municipalities. The chief towns are Faro and Portimão. Other towns are Albufeira, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Olhão, Silves, Tavira, and Vila Real de Santo António

In the Algarve you can find uncountable amazing places to ride a bike. From the golden coast trails always with the sea in sight or the traditional barrocal with his rocky thecnical gravel roads and single tracks or the rural roads with short and easy cups and downs till the Serra Algarvia with mountain untraffic roads or offroads with stunning panoramic views. The summer months see high temperatures that attract beach-goers and sun-lovers from around the world. The Algarve has the perfect weather and climate for tourism. The maximum temperatures in the Algarve fluctuate between 15 and 31 °C, with the temperature never falling below zero in the winter months.

With more than 300 days of sun per year and his wide biodiversity Algarve is for shore a place not to be missed!

UCI – Tour of Algarve

It is composed of 5,412 square kilometres with approximately 410,000 permanent inhabitants (density of 76 inhabitants per square kilometre). This figure increases to over a million people at the height of summer.The Algarve is hilly, but traversed with rich valleys. Its highest point is the mountain range of Monchique, with a maximum altitude of 906m (Peak of the Fóia). That’s the reason most of the Pro Tour teams choose the stage race Tour of Algarve to test their top rider for the upcoming season. Riders like Alberto Contador, Lance Armstrong, Bradley Wiggins, Tony Martin, Richie Porte are some of the past winners of this beautiful event raced every february.

The region is also the home of the ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 170 square kilometres and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds. By bike you can ride along it since Vila Real till Quinta do Lago in the taking breath flat Ecovia.

The Algarve is a popular destination for tourism, primarily because of its beaches, Mediterranean climate, safety and numerous outdoor activities. The length of the south-facing coastline is approximately 155 kilometres. Beyond the westernmost point of Cape St Vincent it stretches a further 50 kilometres to the north. The coastline is notable for picturesque limestone caves and grottoes, particularly around Lagos, which are accessible by powerboat. Praia da Marinha, Lagoa was classified as one of the 100 most beautiful and well preserved beaches of the world.

São Domingos Old Mines

To discover a different side of the Algarve, lose yourself in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Ride through pathways of colourful flowers and visit ancient castles, once home to the Moors.

In Cabo de S. Vicente, discover a land that was once thought of as the “end of the world”. Climb up to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve, in the verdant Serra de Monchique hills. Take a rest by one of the region’s many waterways in a truly beautiful landscape.

Head inland to the Serra do Caldeirão and enjoy the various regional crafts on show, ranging from palm leaf basketwork and worked copper through to hand-painted earthenware.

Experience the warmth of the local people and share a glass of wine or medronho grape spirit, or a filhó fritter with some smoked meat.

And by the border, ride up right beside the River Guadiana as it flows through a Natural Park and visit the traditional village of Alcoutim or Mértola.

Trans-Algarve

The most popular guided bike holiday  available is the Trans-Algarve.

7 Days package for €990 including:

1st Day – Airport transfer from FAO airport to Vila Galé ALbacora Hotel****, guests reception meeting and presentation, dinner and accomodation at the Hotel in Tavira.

2nd Day – Trip from Tavira untill Castro Marim by local train (30min). Departure from Castro Marim castle riding trough Serra de Tavira where you find traditional small villages lost in time, on the way taste a splendid luch in an unforgivable traditional resaturant untill reach Feiteira where you will stay the night at a small school converted as accomodation.

3rd Day – From Feiteira to Messines a journey by the mystique Serra do Caldeirão with his unique Fauna and Flora with a nice lunch in the most tradicinal village of the Algarve, Alte.

4th Day – From Messines to Caldas de Monchique you will face Silves medieval castle after crossing a beautifull dich. After will climb till reach the top of Picota mountain to then ride trough a stunning single track untill you get to Caldas de Monchique where a thermal village waits for you.

5th Day – Leaving Caldas de Monchique is time to climb to the highest point of the Algarve, Fóia and then downhill the mountain untill you reach the Costa Vicentina on the west coast of Europe. The dinner and accomodation will be in a tradicional villa in Almograve.

6th Day – Last stage will guide you though Costa Vicentina all the way right beside the sea with his marvellous landscapes and paradisiac virgen beaches. The arrival will be in the beautifull city of Lagos. After you will travel by train to Palacio de Estoi Hotel. Last night dinner is just memorable!

7th Day – Transfer to  the airport.
